WHERE CAN I FIND GOTHAM GREENS PRODUCE?
You can find a list of local supermarkets and restaurants that carry our products here. We are actively seeking additional retailers and would love your help in requesting our products at your local grocery store. We're adding new retailers every week so please be sure to check our website for updates.
DO I NEED TO WASH MY GREENS?
All of our greens are unwashed, as indicated on the label near the 'Net Weight' and 'Enjoy By' date. Please note that all of our products are pesticide-free and grown in sterile greenhouses without the use of soil. So in other words, these are very clean greens! Many of our customers, including chefs, eat and serve them right out of the package while others give them a quick rinse or whirl through a salad spinner. The choice is yours. Also, we find that the shelf life and quality is greatly improved when it remains unwashed. There is less moisture in the package so that slows down the leaves from getting slimy or wilted.
IS YOUR PRODUCE ORGANIC?
While we are not "certified organic" we believe our products are superior to many “organic certified” products. We grow using hydroponic methods (see below for more on hydroponics), and don’t use soil, so being certified organic is tricky. But we grow using less land and less water than most farming methods. Being in our hydroponic greenhouse environment, we don’t have any weeds which eliminates the need for herbicides. For pest management we rely on beneficial insects so our products are pesticide-free. For nutrients, we use a unique blend of mineral salts and micronutrients, many of which are OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) certified. As you may know, certified organic doesn’t necessarily mean that pesticides weren’t used. At Gotham Greens we take a very holistic approach to growing our produce and introduce beneficial insects instead of using harmful chemical pesticides. Further, organic certification defines how food is produced but does not necessarily address quality, safety, resource consumption, or nutritional value; all issues which Gotham Greens addresses through our expert growers, high quality products, comprehensive food safety program, freshness, and year-round local production.
DO YOU USE HARMFUL CHEMICAL PESTICIDES?
As a hydroponic greenhouse environment we don’t have any weeds, and so eliminate the need for herbicides. For pest management we rely on beneficial insects and organic treatments so our products are pesticide-free. For nutrients, we use a unique blend of mineral salts and micronutrients, many of which are OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) certified.
WHY GROW HYDROPONICALLY?
Our advanced growing methods yields 20-30 times more product per acre than field production while eliminating any use of arable land. Our 170,000 square feet of greenhouses across 4 facilities in 2 cities produce yields equivalent to over 100 acres of conventional field farming making us the largest urban agriculture company in the world.
Hydroponics offers many compelling benefits. Hydroponic farming, when practiced effectively is very efficient, using a fraction of the amount of resources as traditional farming practices. At Gotham Greens we use advanced, re-circulating hydroponic techniques to maintain precision plant nutrition in our year-round climate controlled rooftop greenhouses. This enables us to use 1/10th the amount of water as traditional soil based practices while eliminating all agricultural runoff. This is especially pertinent given natural resource constraints, persistent drought, and related adverse impacts on the environment including agricultural runoff is one of the leading causes of global water pollution.
DO YOU OFFER TOURS?
As a commercial-grade farm, we are not currently set up or equipped to handle public tours of our facility for food safety reasons.
However, we host free tours outside our greenhouse in Gowanus, Brooklyn from our observation deck. These tours are held weekly between April-November. Be sure to check out our Eventbrite page for more detailed information.
